Dangers of Dehydration

Why is it important to stay hydrated?

Water is essential for the body to function properly, it plays a role in even the most basic processes such as pumping blood. There are a number of other benefits to maintaining a good hydration level. These include:

  • Improving elimination of toxins from the body
  • Increasing energy and alertness
  • Improving digestion and weight management
  • More youthful looking skin

It is not enough to just drink a glass every other day. The danger with not drinking enough water is that you can become dehydrated. Dehydration symptoms include:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Long periods between urinations
  • Dark coloured urine (you should aim for a clear to light yellow colour)
  • Dry skin

Chronic dehydration can cause more serious problems like:

  • Kidney stones
  • Fatigue
  • Moodiness
  • Constipation

Thus, you should drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. 
This doesn’t mean drink more fluids of the alcoholic or caffeinated variety…alcohol and caffeine increases dehydration. Keep your fluids up and you will find you are much more alert, energised and functioning better.
