A new charity, The Foundation for Community Inspiration, is aiming to improve the lives of thousand of people around the world as it embarks on a major fundraising initiative to provide essential medical equipment.
As its first major project, The Foundation is working in Ghana with other agencies to support the building of a new clinic for a cooperative of 135 fruit farmers that now has a fruit processing factory employing 1100 workers yet does not have adequate medical resources to ensure their health and wellbeing.
The "Blue Skies" organisation was established 10 years ago by Anthony Pile – he had a vision to enable local people to create sustainable employment for their communities, that dream is now a successful reality that brings essential trade into the area and supports the livelihoods of 75 nearby villages. But funds are not available to extend Blue Skies’ remit of care to employees or local villagers and it was on a recent visit to the plant that Leicestershire GP, Dr Julia Piper, saw for herself the great need of these workers, their families and their local communities. This was her inspiration to establish a charity that could directly improve the situation.
"The main health issues relate to the control of infection - people are still dying young of malaria, TB and HIV," said Dr Piper. "The charity hopes to raise monies to provide better sanitation and clean water supplies and has already made recommendations on the purchase of basic equipment like a blood pressure machine, clinical waste bins and cleansing gel for the hands so as to reduce the transmission of infection. Workers are also experiencing musculoskeletal pain caused by work related activity, this is simply remedied but does need some capital investment. The Foundation for Community Inspiration will help to alleviate these problems and will extend the care offered by the clinic to other local inhabitants – to be a true community resource."

Whilst much is known about the importance of traditional medicine and the evidence for its continued use, far less is known about alternative medicine and integrated therapies. 25 years ago, they were considered unorthodox, but today they are very much more accepted and openly practised. Research shows that 90% of us use them in one form or another, and we know that when correctly and safely administered by open-minded and trained professionals, how beneficial they can be for body, mind and spirit.

As we write, there have been over 1000 cases of Measles in France. Switzerland and Germany also have significant problems with measles. This is because these countries do not have such good immunisation coverage as we do in the UK. By contrast there have been 80 cases in England. The most recent outbreak of measles is at Leeds University where so far 15 students have been affected. The first case was exposed during a skiing trip to France.
