Open letter to Parents of Children with Autism from Dr Julia Piper BM, BS, BMedSci, MRCGP, DFFP, DipOccMed, DipAccMed
This is a slightly annoted copy of a letter I wrote in response to a Mother of a child with Autism. I thought you might find it helpful when deciding to come to visit us at our clinic in Stoneygate, Leicester, UK:-
My own family has had to deal with the challenges posed by autism and schizophrenia. I have therefore spent the last three or four years of my life reading everything I could find on the planet about autism and psychosis! I am therefore fairly new to the field but I have a very good knowledge in the area. However I am delighted that you have a degree on autism and find this very exciting!
My practice carries out functional medicine and we have a functional nutritionalist. Our autism protocol focuses on a great breadth of subjects but depending on peoples’ finances, it can be based with or without testing for biomedical markers. It is a huge subject but I usually start with the CF/GS diet also excluding additives, preservatives and in particular aspartame and MSG. If we are able to measure markers, I like to look at dysbiosis, the presence of yeast or other organisms in the gut, organic acids including mitochondrial function, indicators for efficiency of methylation and glutathione, deficiencies in amino acids, minerals, vitamins and fatty acids, underlying metal toxicities especially mercury and aluminium.
With respect to treatments ... I have used B12 injections and also Methylcobalamin but this very much depends on the biomedical markers for methylation and also the detoxification genomic profile.
I am very interested in meeting you ... as I would very much like to work to develop our protocols along the lines of giving IV Glutathione as I have read that this can be very effective. I would also like to be able to support chelation therapy as I know that this can produce very good effects as well.
The other areas to consider are those of food intolerances and coeliac. There is no gold standard test for the former but some of the bowel markers such as calprotectin and eosinophil x can be very helpful in ensuring a potential inflammatory problem within the bowel.
I have read most of Abram Hoffer’s work in psychosis and autism also allergy, ADHD and asthma. I attended a lecture earlier this year by Jon Pangborn PhD and was riveted with his incredible knowledge of neurotransmission. I am currently in process of reading Sidney Baker’s book called Autism: Effective Biomedical Treatments and another by Kenneth Bock MD called Healing the New Childhood Epidemics (Autism, ADHD, Asthma, and Allergies). I attend Genova’s conferences regularly and I am tuned into updates for functional medicine. I work closely with our neuropsychologist Dr Ahmed Vanker in the diagnosis of autism and statementing where appropriate for education purposes. I am also in touch with various internet autisms support groups who email me regularly with updates. When I look at the websites from these groups I can see that my knowledge seems to be well up-to-date with respect to autism.
Over the past ten years we have given single vaccine for the MMR and have worked closely with the Jabs organisation to achieve this. We also work very hard to support parents who need to have their children immunised in different ways to minimise the impact on their immune systems. I did look at joining DAN and I did complete the questionnaire for this but for some reason the internet then froze and I was unable to complete it! Maybe I should return to this soon. I often listen to and receive information from the Institute of Functional Medicine in America and would love to attend some of their lectures. Dr Jeffrey Bland’s name; Co- Founder of the IFM, obviously comes up everywhere in lieu of this!
I would be very interested in working with your son / daughter. If you look at our website, our patient guide is on there with our fees and prices. As you are aware, functional medical tests are quite expensive but when strategically positioned they can be of enormous support.
I do hope that I have answered all your questions. Let me know if you would like to meet up and if so I will be very excited to talk to you.
With best wishes.
Yours sincerely
Dr Julia Piper

Whilst much is known about the importance of traditional medicine and the evidence for its continued use, far less is known about alternative medicine and integrated therapies. 25 years ago, they were considered unorthodox, but today they are very much more accepted and openly practised. Research shows that 90% of us use them in one form or another, and we know that when correctly and safely administered by open-minded and trained professionals, how beneficial they can be for body, mind and spirit.
