MARCH 2008 - PRIVATE GENERAL PRACTICE SERVICES AND FAMILY OF SCHOOLS IN SHEFFIELD VISIT GHANA
In March 2008 Dr Julia Piper, Mike Piper, and David Piper visited Ghana on behalf of the practice charity The Foundation for Community Inspiration together with 3 representatives from the Family of Schools in Sheffield. Whilst in Ghana they were guests of Blue Skies in Ghana. During the visit Dr Piper opened a new medical clinic at Blue Skies, and visited a number of schools and villages in the Central Region of Ghana. Following the trip the Foundation agreed to sent further medical supplies to the Blue Skies clinic, has sent children's books to be used in the clinic and some of the local schools and has agreed to finance the building of a kindergarten and community centre in a village called Budukwa in the Central Region of Ghana in collaboration with The Family of Schools in Sheffield. MARCH 2007 - PRACTICE SPONSORS NEW CHARITY - THE FOUNDATION FOR COMMUNITY INSPIRATION
A new charity, The Foundation for Community Inspiration, is aiming to improve the lives of thousand of people around the world as it embarks on a major fundraising initiative to provide essential medical equipment.
As its first major project, The Foundation is working in Ghana with other agencies to support the building of a new clinic for a cooperative of 135 fruit farmers that now has a fruit processing factory employing 1100 workers yet does not have adequate medical resources to ensure their health and wellbeing.
The ‘Blue Skies’ organisation was established 10 years ago by Anthony Pile – he had a vision to enable local people to create sustainable employment for their communities, that dream is now a successful reality that brings essential trade into the area and supports the livelihoods of 75 nearby villages. But funds are not available to extend Blue Skies’ remit of care to employees or local villagers and it was on a recent visit to the plant that Leicestershire GP, Dr Julia Piper, saw for herself the great need of these workers, their families and their local communities. This was her inspiration to establish a charity that could directly improve the situation.
“The main health issues relate to the control of infection - people
are still dying young of malaria, TB and HIV,” said Dr Piper. “The
charity hopes to raise monies to provide better sanitation and clean water
supplies and has already made recommendations on the purchase of basic
equipment like a blood pressure machine, clinical waste bins and cleansing
gel for the hands so as to reduce the transmission of infection. Workers
are also experiencing musculoskeletal pain caused by work related activity,
this is simply remedied but does need some capital investment. The Foundation
for Community Inspiration will help to alleviate these problems and will
extend the care offered by the clinic to other local inhabitants – to
be a true community resource.”
