The prestigious gut.bmj.com concludes that because probiotics have
such a reasonable evidence base, that as a general recommendation, they should be
tried for a period of no less than a month; in order to make a judgement about
their effectiveness.
In double blind controlled trials, at 8 weeks, patients in a trial reported a statistically
significant improvement of 47% in overall symptom severity score, 47% in
abdominal distension/bloating, 44% satisfaction with bowel habit, 47% in number
of days without pain, 44% improvement in quality of life and 48% improvement in
abdominal pain.
