A test for breathing which can help to detect early lung conditions, e.g. asthma, heart failure.
The resting ECG looks at the electrical activity of the heart at rest and can help find silent heart problems as well as those where symptoms are present.
Uses the Frammingham Risk Assessment guidelines to estimate a 10 year risk for "hard" coronary heart disease outcomes (myocardial infarction and coronary death). These guidelines are designed to estimate risk in adults aged 20 and older who do not have heart disease or diabetes.
This detects the presence of blood in the stool and is recommended for patients over the age of 45. The option of referral for a sigmoidoscopy colonoscopy will be discussed and advised upon where appropriate.
Screening for prostate cancer is by measurement of the PSA (prostate specific antigen) together with digital rectal examination. It is recommended for patients over 45 and those with a family.
Thin Prep cytology uses the latest technique for sampling cervical cells being more effective than the conventional PAP Smear for the detection of abnormal cells and the reduction of inadequate specimens.
If clinically indicated, HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) gonorrhoea and Chlamydia (one of the causes of infertility) can be tested for at extra.
The CA125 tumour marker and high resolution colour Doppler scanning are both used to help detect ovarian cancer (organized at Spire or Nuffield Hospitals in Leicester).
Thyroid Disease can be silent in its early stages and is also a great mimicker of disease.
A combined blood test which includes detection of antibodies the HIV 1 and 2 viruses and the HIV p24 antigen. The benefit of having a test for the p24 antigen is that it allows earlier detection of HIV infection from as soon as 4 weeks after contact, compared to 12 weeks when it is omitted. Other tests for sexually transmitted infections can be organized after discussion with the nurse.
A common and treatable form of sexually transmitted disease
Indicated in women with mild abnormalities detected at routine cervical screening or those with a previous history of abnormal cervical smears. HPV detection is a more sensitive marker for cervical disease then cervical smears alone.
There are a multitude of other tests which can be carried out and if you have any particular health worries the doctor will suggest further tests that may be appropriate.

Regular mammography screening has been shown to reduce breast cancer mortality by up to 30-50%. These can be carried out annually over the age of 40 years. Under 40 years they can only usually be done if you have a family history of cancer. Please discuss this with the doctor.

Swine Flu Vaccinations are now available at the practice for anyone whos is in an 'at risk' group. This includes 1. Children aged 6 months to 5 years, 2. Anyone suffering from a chronic illness or whose immune system is compromised or anyone living with such a person, 3. Pregnant women.

This year's annual flu vaccinations are now available from the practice. Please ring to book an appointment. You may also like to consider having a Pneumococcal vaccination to immunize you against Pneumonia which is a potentially severe complication if you do get flu.
