Coeliac Disease is one of those ice berg illnesses where we see only a fraction of those people who have gluten intolerance & Coeliac; but there are many others who slip under the net and are not diagnosed.

If you have any symptoms of ill health you should take medical advice but remember that illness can be caused by deficiencies of vital nutrients. This may be due to a poor diet, difficulties with digestion or absorption ( as in the case of Coeliac) or other causes.

If you require the most up to date blood & gene tests for Coeliac, call us today.

You know when you see & hear something that makes you feel inspired and humbles you because you have no idea what the capabilities of the human spirit are and then you see these unassuming quiet people get up on stage and absolutely come alive!

Well I’ve decided that we are going to have a musical evening at the Practice in the early summer….so if any of you reading this would like to join in let me know…

April is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month and the latest figures from Cancer Research UK show that the number of cases of bowel cancer have risen considerably. In the 1970s, the figure for men diagnosed with bowel cancer was 45 in every 100,000 – now it is 58. For women the figure has risen from 35 to 37. The diet of processed and refined food, so much enjoyed by many people in the UK, has to be one of the causes of the rise in these numbers. Roughage is an essential part of a healthy diet and eating spelt – which the Romans called their “Marching Grain” – as a substitute for wheat, not only reduces the symptoms suffered by those with a wheat intolerance, but also provides B vitamins, iron, zinc, niacin (for lowering cholesterol and lipoprotein levels), riboflavin and has a low Glycaemic Index. The natural fibre in this whole-grain is a hugely important component of a bowel healthy diet.

I thought you might be interested to know that last Tuesday’s ‘Inside Health’ featured post-traumatic hypopituitarism. I’m sorry to be slow to let you know,

the catch-up link is http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01rr37c (20 mins into the programme). It’s only available for today. However I can forward by e mail a transcript if anyone would like to read it.

As the neurosurgeon on the programme points out, up to a million people may have PTHP in the UK, undiagnosed, that’s one in 60, so you probably know at least one person with it! Think of a friend or relative who seems depressed, who maybe has been diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome or fibromyalgia, and please let him or her know about this possibility. An appointment with an endocrinologist might mean a transformed quality of life, and might even save his/her life.

Do please support our hospice in any way that you can as their work is inspirational. We have all had our lives touched by their support…

Loros is an independent local charity providing palliative care and support within Leicestershire and Rutland.

LOROS charges no fees for its services, which are available to all local people based upon medical need, regardless of their ethnicity or faith.

LOROS needs to raise £4 million a year to provide its valued services to 2,500 patients and their families each year.

We continue our coverage of Irritable Bowel Syndrome and the role of Probiotics…

The prestigious gut.bmj.com concludes that because probiotics have
such a reasonable evidence base, that as a general recommendation, they should be
tried for a period of no less than a month; in order to make a judgement about
their effectiveness.

In double blind controlled trials, at 8 weeks, patients in a trial reported a statistically
significant improvement of 47% in overall symptom severity score, 47% in
abdominal distension/bloating, 44% satisfaction with bowel habit, 47% in number
of days without pain, 44% improvement in quality of life and 48% improvement in
abdominal pain.

Fortunately, the most recent significant advances in our understanding of irritable bowel syndrome have occurred in the field of characterising the GI tract microbiota imbalances and dysfunctions which occur in IBS.As a result, it is now recognised that the interaction between the microbiota and host factors can have an impact not only on gut barrier function, but also the brain-gut axis and even host immune engagement.

Hence the use of probiotics can have greater, far reaching effects than simply rebalancing potential disturbances in the gut flora in the treatment of IBS than was once thought. But dont forget to have your symptoms diagnosed. If you have passed any blood, have abdominal pain, or altered bowel movements of a persistent nature, also if you have a family history of bowel cancer; then speak to your doctor. This month is also Bowel cancer Awareness month!

I was back on the radio this morning on the subject of Euthanasia. Diane Ruth Whittle’s death at Dignitas in Switzerland was discussed.

I really do think that we in the UK Medical World need to work out how to encorporate supporting people who are so terribly ill that they want to end it all. There is too much room for missing the complex assessments that are required in this subject; if we abdicate our responsibility to Dignitas in Switzerland.

Dont get me wrong, I am not advocating Carte Blanche Euthanasia, rather that we stop sweeping the subject under the carpet and do the right thing for those people who are in a severely terminal condition or where life is unbearable. But how would we define the criteria for this?

This is such a complex subject and anyone who knows me will be aware that I am pro life! Look at Steven Thorpe’s amazing fight back to life…..

What do you think?
