At Private General Practice Services we are Able to help with Addictions, especially alcoholism, but also with dual addictions where drugs are also involved.

Alcohol is related to over 60 medical disorders including liver damage, Gastritis, bleeding from tear in the food pipe, cancers and short term memory loss. Social consequences such as loss of family support, financial Hardship and legal difficulties are common, as are psychological consequences such as low self esteem and hopelessness.

Patient Admissions

If there is an immediate, urgent need for Detoxification in this client group - such as vomiting, acute jaundice, haematemesis or other severe physical health Problems, or symptoms of Delerium Tremens or Wernicke’s Encephalopathy, then in-patient treatment as a medical emergency is the only safe option. We are able to organise admissions to a Private Hospital if appropriate.

Consultant Consultations and Self Help

We are frequently approached by patients who are Desperate to overcome their alcohol dependence.  Many patients present in the early stages of withdrawal, having decided themselves to attempt to withdraw, without Medical support if necessary.  It is important to consider that there is no risk free option with Alcohol arrtibutable deaths 35/100,000 Population in this country. Consequently, not intervening or dealing with the problem leaves the patient at continuing high risk. Anyone suffering from Alcohol addiction is therefore advised to seek professional help as soon as possible either from their own NHS GP or privately Here at the Practice.

Our Consultant Psychiatrist, Dr Anshuman Pant, MBBS, MD, MRCPsych, Specialises in addictions especially Alcoholism, dual addictions where drugs are also involved, and co-morbid Mental Health problems like Depression, Anxiety Disorders, Psychotic Disorders and Cognitive Disorders.

Dr Pant is able to Prescribe appropriate pharmacological medicines to assist Patients with alcohol addictions. All medications are prescribed under Strict Home Detox Guidelines.

The Home Detox Process  

• Our Consultant Psychiatrist will see you and assess you but normally we would like you to see one of our Private GP’s first who will carry out a full medical Examination including mental health Assessment and blood tests. 
• Our Consultant will then be able to organise Home Detoxification only if appropriate and safe and if he is happy with the results of the blood tests.  He will discuss expectations of detox, preparation and gradual Reduction before detox, social support, and relapse prevention including pharmacological strategies like Naltrexone, Baclofen and Acamprosate. The detox regime would be individualized on the basis of patients severity of dependence using Chlordiazepoxide or Oxazepam.
• The home detoxification process is coordinated by our Community Psychiatric Nurse, Don Randle.
• Don will look after you through your detoxification process and then will follow you up afterwards to ensure that you stay off the alcohol.
• Patients are usually seen Daily for the first 3 days, then every 2-3 days until the course is completed. After Detox the patient twill be seen weekly by Don or another clinician for relapse prevention and monitoring.

Thiamine supplements.

If appropriate patients will be prescribed Thiamine 100mg three times daily and Vitamin B compound strong two tablets three times daily. We will also make a judgement about the need for treatment with Intra Muscular Pabrinex.  For patients with poor nutrition or very long standing heavy drinking who may be at greater risk of serious complications like Wernicke’s encephalopathy, IM pabrinex given daily for 3 doses will be considered. Patients will need to be observed after administration in case of (rare) anaphylactic reaction.

Other help available from the Practice

We also have the expert help of Psychologists who can help in supporting any underlying issues with depression or anxiety. 

Dr Piper carries out Hypnotherapy and Neurolinguistic Programming and will be able to teach you meditational tools and self‑hypnosis in order to access your right Brain to add to your coping tools.

Dr Saloni Singh and Nicki Armytage are both formal Life Coaches and is also accessible for follow up once you have been treated.

Lindsay Kubicki our Nutritionist and Dr Piper, our Functional Medical Doctor, are also available to help you with your long-termNnutrition and diagnose any underlying deficiencies which may be contributing to any mental health problems associated with the Alcoholism.
